What is a naming day celebration?

November 07, 20243 min read

A naming day ceremony is a beautiful, non-religious alternative to a traditional christening or baptism. These celebrations honour the new life in your family, offer the chance to welcome the child formally, and serve as a loving, heartfelt event for family and friends.

Though there are no religious elements, a naming day can still include rich traditions, meaningful blessings, and a few symbolic touches that are uniquely special.

Here’s a guide to what you can include in a naming day ceremony, including the role of honorary ‘Guide Adults’.

The beauty of a naming day is its flexibility. You can shape the structure and elements to reflect your values, traditions, and personal wishes.

Typically, the event starts with some welcoming words from myself, acknowledging the importance of the day. This introduction sets the tone and expresses gratitude for the friends and family who’ve gathered to celebrate.

Heartfelt readings, poems, or personal words about the child follow. These often focus on the joys of welcoming a child, the beauty of family, or inspiring hopes for the child's future.

At this stage, the child is officially ‘Named’ within the circle of family and friends. I will say the child’s name aloud, welcoming the child by their full name, which is often the first time it's celebrated so formally. This is a moment of focus and celebration for the name itself.

Here, the parents may make a vow or share personal promises to the child. These vows can be anything from promises to protect and nurture the child, to encouraging specific values like kindness, resilience, and curiosity.

‘Guide Adults’ or ‘Mentors’ take on a supportive role. These adults are usually close friends or family members who are committed to being positive influences in the child’s life. The guide parents may offer personal commitments or pledges.

Wedding renewal vows are often included at this part of the ceremony. This ranges from the parents exchanging simple vows to more complex ceremonies including hand-fasting, jumping the broom or similar elements.

Other family members, like grandparents, aunts, uncles, and siblings, can be invited to participate, perhaps by sharing stories, offering a short blessing, or lighting a candle to symbolise love and protection for the child.

Crystals carry special meanings and are wonderful for blessings in a non-religious ceremony. This may involve holding a crystal chosen for its symbolic properties - such as rose quartz for love, amethyst for wisdom, or clear quartz for healing - and offering a blessing. The crystal is then kept in the child’s room as a lasting symbol of this beautiful day

Other elements that are symbolic include planting a tree, creating a memory box or the creation of a finger print tree picture of all the guests.

A naming ceremony typically lasts about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the elements included. With a relaxed structure and warm environment, there’s space for laughter, smiles, and maybe a few tears of joy without feeling rushed.

Naming day celebrations have a natural warmth and personal touch, allowing you to honour your child’s life in a way that’s meaningful to you and your loved ones. I work with you to create a special day filled with love, guidance, and a lifetime of beautiful memories.
