What Happens When a Funeral Celebrant Visits Your Home?

October 28, 2026•5 min read

When someone you love has died, emotions are often heightened, and your family may be trying to navigate a difficult and unfamiliar time. Then, a stranger arrives at your door to talk about someone who meant so much to you. What should you expect from your funeral celebrant, and how does that first meeting work?

Of course, I can’t speak for every celebrant, but I can explain how I approach my meetings with families and what you can expect when I visit you.

My role is to get to know your loved one through your memories and stories, so I can create a ceremony that reflects their life, your family’s wishes, and your views, beliefs and values. I want the tribute I write to feel as though I knew the person myself. I want to capture the special memories, the cherished moments and the little details that made them who they were.

Getting to know your loved one

I always begin with the straightforward details. We talk about their full name, date of birth and information about their death. We also cover the people who need to be acknowledged or thanked, including their spouse or partner, children, grandchildren, parents, siblings, friends and wider family.

From there, we travel back through their life. We talk about their childhood, where they grew up, where they went to school or university, and the path their life took. We explore their career, achievements, awards and hobbies. If they served in the armed forces, we’ll talk about their military service and the role it played in their life.

As we begin to build a picture of their life, our conversation naturally becomes more personal. What did they love? What did they dislike? What were their interests and passions? What made them laugh? Most importantly, what will they be remembered for? What qualities and characteristics made them special to the people around them?

These are often the details that bring a tribute to life.

I’ll ask you to share your memories and stories, and we’ll discuss which ones might be included in the ceremony. Sometimes, a seemingly small moment or a familiar family saying tells us more about a person than a list of achievements ever could.

We’ll also talk about whether any family members or friends would like to contribute by reading a poem, sharing a reading or speaking about their own memories.

Throughout our conversation, I take pages and pages of notes. There is no need to worry about remembering everything or finding the perfect words. My job is to listen, ask questions and help you tell your loved one’s story.

Planning the ceremony

Once we have talked about their life, we move on to the practical details of the ceremony itself.

Music choices

Most funeral services include three or four pieces of music, although this will depend on the time available and the arrangements for the service. Music may be chosen for the coffin’s entrance, the reflection, the committal and the exit.

Some families know exactly which songs or pieces they would like, perhaps because they were particular favourites of their loved one. Others may welcome suggestions, and I’m always happy to help you find something suitable.

Photographs

We’ll discuss whether you would like photographs to be included in the service. Some venues allow a montage of images to be shown during the reflection, while other families prefer to choose just one photograph that captures their loved one beautifully.

Readings and religious elements

If your loved one was religious, we’ll talk about any prayers, Bible passages or other readings you would like to include. The ceremony can reflect their faith and beliefs, as well as the wishes of the family. If you cannot find the perfect piece, I’m always happy to write something.

Pallbearers

We’ll discuss who will carry the coffin. You may have family members or friends who would like to take on this role, or you may prefer the funeral directors to provide pallbearers. We’ll make sure your wishes are understood and the arrangements are discussed.

Dress code, flowers and charitable donations

Finally, we’ll cover the remaining details, including whether you would like a particular dress code, your preferences for flowers and whether you would like donations to be made to a chosen charity.

If you are holding a wake or gathering afterwards, I’ll also take the details so I can include them in the service and remind those attending where they can join you afterwards.

There is no right or wrong way to do this

Every family is different, and every life has its own story. Some families arrive at our meeting with photographs, written notes and a clear idea of what they would like. Others may feel overwhelmed and have no idea where to begin. Both are absolutely fine.

You don’t need to prepare a speech, organise your memories or worry about getting emotional. We can take our time, follow the conversation wherever it needs to go and cover everything at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

My aim is to make the process as straightforward and reassuring as possible, while creating a ceremony that feels personal, meaningful and true to the person you are saying goodbye to.

After all, this is not simply about marking the end of a life. It is about recognising the person who lived it, the people they loved and the memories they leave behind.
