The first Saturday of the year, and instead of leading a funeral, I found myself sitting quietly among the mourners, attending one.

One of my husband’s friends from university died unexpectedly in a car crash just a few days before Christmas. A healthy man in his mid-50s, he leaves behind a loving wife and children who are only just stepping into adulthood. His loss feels both sudden and deeply unfair.

His closest friends from university carried his coffin into the crematorium. As they returned to their seats, tears filled their eyes - grief, shock, and disbelief lingering in the air as the reality settled that their friend is no longer walking alongside them in this life.

The eulogy was read by his son, a moment that felt both heartbreaking and profoundly brave. The celebrant then shared more about his life and the things that brought him joy. His sister, who lives on the other side of the world, had written a beautiful and moving tribute, which the celebrant read on her behalf.

There is no doubt that he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Yet moments like this also invite reflection. They gently remind those of us who remain that life is fragile, time is precious, and none of us truly know how long we are here for. They call us to live with intention, to love more openly, and to align our lives with what truly matters.
