At a wedding reception, the ‘Top Table’ is traditionally reserved for the most significant people in the lives of the newlyweds.
Traditional seating at the top table often includes:
The Bride and Groom (centre)
Parents of the Bride and Groom
Best Man and Maid/Matron of Honour
In a traditional order would be: Bride's mother, Groom's father, Bride, Groom, Bride's father, Groom's mother. The best man and maid of honour are typically at either end.
Weddings today, where blended families are increasingly common, there’s a refreshing flexibility in how to organise the top table at the reception.
Couples now have the freedom to move beyond traditional seating arrangements to create a layout that reflects the unique makeup of their families.
Options might include a sweetheart table with just the couple, allowing parents and step-parents to enjoy tables nearby, or an extended top table that seats both parents, step-parents, and even siblings or close friends.
Another option, if the newly-weds are already parents, is to have their children on the top table alongside the Best Man and Maid of Honour. This is an excellent illustration of a blended family.
For larger families, some couples opt for a separate ‘Family Table’ for each parent and their spouse, ensuring everyone has a place of honour without crowding a single table. This approach not only makes family members feel respected but also fosters a warm, inclusive atmosphere that celebrates the couple’s entire family network, new and old alike.
In cases, couples choose to reserve the top table for the newlyweds, the maid of honour, and the best man only. This simplifies seating and minimises potential tensions.
The key is to plan with sensitivity and communicate with each family member beforehand to ensure everyone feels valued and included.
